How I Learned to Hear God’s Voice

Learning to Hear God’s Voice at DTS: A Personal Story

Before I came to DTS, I had no clue how to hear God’s voice.

I would hear my friends talk about it—how God spoke to them, led them, encouraged them—and deep down, I just didn’t get it.

It sounded amazing… but felt far away from anything I had ever experienced.

I wanted to believe it was possible. But honestly, I wasn’t sure.

Week 1: Hearing God’s Voice

In the very first week of my YWAM Discipleship Training School, we had teaching on how to hear God’s voice

It felt like a window opened into a world I had only heard whispers about.
The stories. The testimonies. The truth that God still speaks today
It was exciting, inspiring… and honestly, a little overwhelming.

At the end of class, our teacher smiled and said:

“You’ve heard about it. Now it’s time to do it. We’re going to listen for God’s voice.”

The Moment It Became Real

I was nervous. My mind was racing: What if I don’t hear anything? What if I make it up? What if I get it wrong?

But we prayed.

And in that quiet space, I sensed a phrase drop into my heart:
“Everything will be okay. I am with you.”

It wasn’t dramatic. It didn’t sound like a booming voice. But it cut through the noise.

I didn’t make it up. It wasn’t something I would say to myself. It felt different. Steady. Kind. Full of peace. That was the first time I knew God was speaking to me personally.

Learning to Listen

That moment didn’t make me a perfect Christian. I still have questions, and I still get things wrong. But it shifted something. I realized that hearing God isn’t about being spiritual enough—it’s about relationship. About slowing down. Making space. Being honest.

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice” (John 10:27). That’s not for a select few. It’s for anyone who belongs to Him.

Start Where You Are

If you’re wondering if God still speaks—He does. You don’t need a special gift. You just need to be open.

You can start with Scripture. Here’s a list of Bible verses about hearing God’s voice if you’re curious.

And if you want space to go deeper, I’d really recommend DTS. It’s not just about information—it’s about experience. About walking with God, learning to listen, and stepping out in faith.

God doesn’t force Himself on anyone. But He’s always speaking. The question is—are we willing to listen?
