Top Malaysian dishes you must try

Malaysia is an absolute food haven 🍲. You’ll find flavors here like nowhere else in the world. Southeast Asia food and adventure is where it’s at! Every meal feels like a celebration of culture. I  love to explore new cultures and FOOD is a great way to experience the essence of it. From bustling hawker stalls to charming cafes, there’s so much to taste. Malaysian food is an adventure you’ll never forget. And the price is right!

Malaysian Food: A Mix of Cultures and Flavors

Malaysia’s food tells the story of its people. The country’s diverse communities—Malay, Chinese, Indian, and others—bring their own magic to the table. The result? An incredible fusion of flavors 🍜. Coconut milk, tamarind, lemongrass, chili… you’ll find these ingredients in so many dishes, adding a punch of boldness (and sometimes SPICE) to every bite. Whether you’re new to Southeast Asian food or you’ve loved it for years, Malaysia will blow you away.

Dishes You Have to Try

  • Nasi lemak: Malaysia’s unofficial national dish. Fragrant coconut rice, spicy sambal, crunchy peanuts, crispy anchovies, and cooling cucumber. Add some fried chicken or beef rendang, and it’s perfection on a plate. Follow this link to make some at home!
  • Char kway teow: Flat rice noodles stir-fried with prawns, cockles, bean sprouts, and soy sauce over a searing flame. That smoky flavor? Unbeatable. And it’s usually very inexpensive ($2 USD a plate)
  • Laksa: Spicy, tangy, and utterly satisfying. Choose between asam laksa (fish-based) or curry laksa (creamy coconut-based) and thank me later.
  • Roti canai: A flaky flatbread served with dhal or curry. It’s so simple yet so addictive. I can eat two in one sitting.  You can also add banana, nutella, cheese, anything you can imagine to have a new roti experience. Here’s a youtube video about the best roti in Kuala Lumpur.
  • Satay: Skewers of grilled, marinated meat served with peanut sauce. So simple, but so good.

The Joy of Street Food

If you’ve never had a meal at a Malaysian hawker stall, come and try! The street food scene here is second to none 🍽️. There are night markets where you can try all sorts of food. I wish I could share the smells and flavours through these words! Malaysian cuisine exploration is a real thing.

Sweets and Drinks You’ll Love

Malaysia’s desserts are just as memorable as its savory dishes. Cendol is a refreshing bowl of shaved ice, coconut milk, palm sugar, and pandan jelly. (my favourite!!) It’s refreshing🍦. Then there’s kuih, colorful bite-sized snacks made with rice flour and coconut. Wash it all down with a glass of teh tarik, frothy milk tea. ☕
